Swinging 60's interior: Give your home a mid-century modern makeover

29/03/2017

A change in season is the perfect time to re-jig your home and inject some colour. Ribbons, Feathers, Cords and any other kind of decorative bits and bobs - what we call 'components' at V V Rouleaux - can be used as a quick fix to transform furnishings into a stunning focal point of any room and give your home the 'lift' it needs.

When it comes to interior design, 60's style looks better than ever, so we gave some tired old lamp shades, lamp bases, cushions, and furniture a cheery psychedelic brights makeover with our ribbons and trimmings. The designs below take inspiration from the 60's art movement; we've added more and then some, with colour upon colour and shape upon shape for a punchy pop art mid century modern interior.

The overall goal of 60's interior design was to warp elements. Space, form, and colour were moldable and used in new ways. So if your living room is largely neutral, there's nothing to say you can't add in a punch of colour with a vibrant upcycled lamp or decorative cushions.

The easy DIY home improvement ideas below will guide you on using 60's decor to transform your home; it's as easy as trimming a lamp or cushion! Let us know what you think in the comments box and tag us in your creations on social media @vvrouleaux.

Fabulously decadent feathered lamp shades are the star of any home. We used eye-catching Muscari Goose Feather Fringe.

Don't stop at shades - lamp bases are ripe for reinvention! Waxed Cord has so many uses, but its great texture makes it especially good for winding around lamp stands. We gave the lamp featured a two-tone makeover.

Grosgrain Ribbon inserted into the seams adds colour and vibrancy to these linen fabric cushions. What's fun about this style is you can  flip them over and have a different colour on the alternate side. Don't feel restricted to grosgrain ribbon, any of our Ribbons will do!

Ribbon wrapped around a plain paper shade creates the look of pleated fabric.  We added colourful fish hooks to give this neutral shade a funky edge.

How gorgeous is this cushion pouffe made out of crocheted Waxed Cord?

Feather Fringe comes as a finished braid that is very easy to work with – simply swathe it around and stitch in place. The same goes for our bullion fringe adorning the sofa which is available to purchase in our Marylebone Lane shop.

You can create woven Ribbon lamp shades with a contemporary or traditional feel by using ribbons of different textures and colours. Doesn't Bird Of Paradise Waxed Cord looks great wrapped around the lamp base?

Our beautifully textured cushions, trimmed with Ribbons, beads, Gimp and Lace, perfectly combine modernity and vintage charm. Elsewhere in the 60's inspired room we have a vintage ribbon design inspired rug, Waxed Cord wrapped lamp, bullion fringe trimmed sofa and Feather Fringe lampshade.

Get weaving! We used Velvet Ribbon, Dots and Spots Ribbon, Ombre Wired Ribbon, Tartan Ribbon and Striped Grosgrain Ribbon to name a few. Don't fancy a big project? Just do one side of the cushion or make a tiny pin cushion out of your leftover ribbon scraps.

Gorgeous Ribbons really come into their own when it comes to creating elegant wrapped lamp shades. Accompany with a Waxed Cord lamp stand and voilà! Your 60s inspired home is complete.

Animate your living space with bold designs. We used approximately 8m of Grosgrain Ribbon for these weaved cushions. Thicker ribbon means you use less of it!
